sorry, not feeling it.Just constructive criticism, and you have every right to go rip mine apart. This just reminds me way too much of photography school, studio lighting 101. I mean the lighting isn't bad..don't get me wrong. But I mean there is no photographer's perception here.Just a pretty girl standing in front of a white backdrop. I guess the red bag adds some impact, but overall, even in commercial photography, the photographer needs to say something. Unless you want to shoot for Penney's.

Thank you for your input. You are correct in that it is a basic white background, on this project it was what was wanted so that text and the clients logo could be laid in and the background extended to cross the gutter in a possible double truck. You are also correct in that the handbag is the focal point and the clients need to show the product is whats important in this shot. I only hope you are right about the JC Pennys account, it would bring way into the six figures of revenue into my studio and I could relax knowing that my expenses for a year were take care of. Ok, I see your point. However, this is a fashion contest, for fashion photography. Fashion photographers are more creative directors than anything. The purpose of a JC Penney's photographer is to sell a shirt, a fashion photographer puts out a creative piece of art.Sorry, I just don't think you deserve to be number one.

I do appreciate that you have shared your opinions with me and I can certainly understand and respect what you are trying to say. However if it is the basic white or gray background and just the model and the clothes in the image that disqualifies it as simplistic and catalogue like and not worthy for consideration then what would you say to Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Gilles Bensimon, and Claudio Basso. All of these masters of fashion photography have worked heavily with the same minimalist setup of just model and plain gray or white sweep and the clothes. Now there is a definite place for the more elaborate creative sets and locations, as well as intense moody or edgy feel. I enjoy the work of the many extremely creative photographers that capture them. However some consideration might be made for pose, attitude, rendition of the garments and meeting the clients needs. I am encouraged that as a young photographer you are challenging the work of others and striving to develop an eye. This can only help to raise the quality of over all work. Thank you again for the attention you have paid to my work and I am grateful for you input.

I am sorry I missed one additional point. I am not sure that I agree with you that fashion photographers perform the same function as creative directors. In todays market a photographer is chosen for a particular style that the ad agency, photo editor, or client feels will fit the purpose of the ad or editorial story. However even though the photographer has a great deal of input into the way a garment should be shot there job, in my opinion, is to pull together the team of makeup artist, hair stylist cloths stylist, first and second assistant and the like to render the clients concept. I have always been hired to shot what the client wants, i.e. there creative teams concept. I am very seldom brought in on the conceptualization phase. I receive a comp or rough layout and I shoot what they want. They are on the set and approve all work before the shoot is over. I am hired to render a particular style and not to indulge myself in shooting what I think the client should have. Sometimes this can be frustrating but as a pro my allegiance is to keeping the client happy, getting paid and developing a good relationship that will insure repeat business. After all I have a crew that depends on me to keep them working and getting paid is what make one a pro. Now I do spend time shooting what I want and expressing my freedom to create what I want. You can see an example of my personal work in the People category I am the winner of the contest.

One final point you stated that The purpose of a JC Penney's photographer is to sell a shirt, a fashion photographer puts out a creative piece of art. I disagree with this belief. The purpose of any style of fashion photographer be it catalog, editorial, or advertising is to sell the clients product. The only type of photography that can focus entirely on creating pieces of art are fine art photographers. A professional commercial photographer is hired by a client to shoot what the client wants.

i like this picture alot & yet, every picture has its dislikes? I REALLY like how the white background makes her pop, but at the same time i wouldve liked to see a little more action in the background so she can prove that she can POP in the picture, if that makes any sense? shes got great attitude, and facial features. 3
